A New Congregant Says...

We became members of the Temple Avodah in the Fall of 2010, a year after moving to Oceanside from Brooklyn, and 21 years after I have arrived to the United States from the former Soviet Union, where practicing Judaism was a taboo and my parents had to obtain matzo for Passover from a clandestine location and carry it home in pillowcases. I wanted my kids to grow up differently than I did but at the same time, I wanted a place where both my husband and I would not feel like outsiders. Temple Avodah is truly a second home to our family. My two older kids attend the Hebrew school where they are learning the language, the traditions and the values. Even with our busy schedules, we do our best to attend as many services and events as we can, and we always feel welcome. The various holiday celebrations feel like family parties with great entertainment for all ages and delicious food. My kids have made many new friends through the Temple. As we prepare for my firstborn’s bar mitzvah, and counting days till my toddler can start Hebrew school, I am thankful for the wonderful first year we have had.
